Freshwater mussel assemblage structure in a regulated river in the Lower Mississippi River Alluvial Basin, USA

چکیده
1. This paper documents a diverse, reproducing freshwater mussel community (20 species) in Lower Lake } an impounded, regulated portion of the Little Tallahatchie River below Sardis Dam in Panola Co., Mississippi, USA. 2. Despite being regulated and impounded, the lake has a heterogeneous array of habitats that differ markedly in mussel community attributes. Four distinct habitat types were identified based on current velocity and substrate characteristics, representing a gradient from habitats having lotic characteristics to lentic habitats. All four habitat types supported mussels, but habitats most resembling unimpounded, lotic situations (relatively higher current velocity and coarser substrate) had the highest mussel abundance and species density (10.1 mussels m , 1.8 species m , respectively). Lentic habitats (no flow, fine substrate) were characterized by lower abundance and species density (2.0 mussels m , 0.8 species m , respectively), but supported mussel assemblages distinctive from lotic habitats. 3. Evidence of strong recent recruitment was observed for most species in the lake and was observed in all four habitat types. 4. Although impounded and regulated, Lower Lake represents one of the few areas of stable largestream habitat in the region. The presence of a diverse, healthy mussel community in this highly modified habitat suggests that a large component of the regional mussel fauna is relatively resilient and adaptable and is limited primarily by the absence of stable river reaches. Management actions that increase stream stability are likely to result in expansion of the mussel fauna and restoration of a valuable component of ecosystem function in this region. متن کاملLate Pleistocene fishes of the Tennessee River Basin: an analysis of a late Pleistocene freshwater fish fauna from Bell Cave (site ACb-2) in Colbert County, Alabama, USA.
The Tennessee River Basin is considered one of the most important regions for freshwater biodiversity anywhere on the globe. The Tennessee River Basin currently includes populations of at least half of the described contemporary diversity of extant North American freshwater fishes, crayfish, mussel, and gastropod species. However, comparatively little is known about the biodiversity of this bas...

The lowermost Mississippi River, defined herein as the river segment downstream of the Old River Control Structure and hydrodynamically influenced by the Gulf of Mexico, extends for approximately 500 km. This segment includes a bedrock (or more precisely, mixed bedrock-alluvial) reach that is bounded by an upstream alluvial-bedrock transition and a downstream bedrock-alluvial transition. Here w...
متن کاملGenetic variability and geographic structure of Lampsilis higginsii mussels in the upper Mississippi River and tributaries
Freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled faunas of animals in the world. Genetic studies can be used to help conserve these animals. Lampsilis higginsii (Higgins' Eye) is a federally endangered mussel in the Upper Mississippi River basin. L. higginsii currently occurs in the Mississippi, St. Croix and Wisconsin rivers and has suffered a 50% reduction in its range since 1965. Populations...

With 77 species, the mussel fauna of Virginia is one of the most diverse in the United States. Fifty-four species or ~70% of the state’s mussel fauna occurs in the rivers of the upper Tennessee River basin, especially in the Clinch and Powell rivers of southwestern Virginia. An additional 23 species reside in rivers of the Atlantic Slope, including the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, James and Cho...
